We arrived in Portugal in February 2014. A few months later, our daughter came over and visited Cabanas de Tavira, where she fell in love with an apartment.
Having sold a small coffee shop in Sevenoaks, Kent, and with a bit of inheritance from her grandmother, she was able to put down a small deposit and set about obtaining a mortgage.
To pay for the mortgage, she needed to rent the apartment. So started a search for someone who could do this. Then came the shock.
The fees from property managers, combined with the gas, electric, and water bills and condominium rates, would be a struggle.
So we looked at the alternatives. After conversations with our accountant and lawyer, it became very apparent that the logical option was to form a company. Hence, the arrival of Optimus Algarve, our daughter's property, was quickly followed by our sons.
Over the years, we have been approached by owners who wanted to switch to us. But in the early days, we were only working for our children and owners who did not want to rent, but wanted a property manager who was reliable and not constantly ringing them with more fees.
We have now opened our doors to those who wish to let their properties as holiday accommodation. So why are they looking at us now? The simple answer is lower fees, 24-hour WhatsApp contact, and personal service.
